The Salerno Coast Guard intervened yesterday afternoon to rescue a man aboard a boat on which a fire broke out.
Yesterday early afternoon, the Salerno Port Authority Operations Room received a report via the toll-free number 1530 of a fire aboard a pleasure craft with one person on board. The vessel was located approximately 100 meters from the mouth of the port of Salerno, in the water in front of the green lighthouse on the Salerno pier.
The SAR patrol boat CP 854, already at sea for a scheduled operation to assist the migrants who arrived yesterday in the port of Salerno, was dispatched to the scene. At the same time, the person on board was advised to don a life jacket and abandon the vessel and swim towards the nearby reef.

In the meantime, the tugboats in service in the port of Salerno were alerted and intervened to facilitate the extinguishing operations. The patrol boat that arrived on site recovered the shipwrecked man in the sea, clinging to a backpack, in an evident state of agitation.
On board, the Coast Guard personnel provided first aid and then handed the unfortunate man over to the care of the 118 paramedics present on the dock, previously alerted by the Operations Room of the Salerno Coast Guard.
Once the vessel was rescued, CP 854 returned to the scene of the accident to continue extinguishing the fire and check for traces of pollution in the sea.
