A suspected trafficker who arrived yesterday in the port of Salerno aboard a ship carrying 21 migrants was stopped by the police in Salerno.
The suspect is Nadir Chabour, 30, an Algerian national, who is under investigation for organizing and managing the illegal entry into the country of 20 of his fellow countrymen, including 2 women and 3 children.
Chabour was identified as the smuggler at the helm of the vessel thanks to statements and images reproduced by the migrants he was transporting. According to reports, he had already violated immigration laws several times: in 2016, he was turned away from Cagliari and in 2018, expelled by the Prefect of Taranto.
In 2019 he was also arrested for illegally returning to Cagliari and in the same year he was hit by a first expulsion order from Varese, repeated also in 2020.
On Sunday 19 February the migrants were rescued and saved in national waters by a merchant vessel flying the Italian flag and then taken yesterday to the commercial port of Salerno, where they received first aid and first assistance as per the protocol of the Prefecture of Salerno.
