New premises for the Emergency Room operational from today, new organization of the first reception department and a competition underway with 15 doctors registered to participate.

This is the news communicated today by Cardarelli, the largest hospital in Campania, which often experiences difficult moments in the emergency room that is identified by all the citizens of the capital and neighboring municipalities as a destination in case of sudden illnesses or accidents.

The renovated premises of the Emergency Room have become operational today, explain Cardarelli, and after about 20 years the patient access path has been reorganized, as well as the areas designated for triage and pre-triage and the waiting area for less serious patients.

To improve information for patients and their companions, a computer management system has also been implemented that allows those waiting to know through monitors how many patients are being treated at the Emergency Room in three different phases: "triage assessment" the moment in which the severity of the case is verified, "in progress of visit" the first moment of treatment of the patient, "in charge/further diagnosis" for patients who are waiting for test results and have already started therapy.

The improvements do not only concern the structure but also the recruitment of staff and the improvement of the organization. In the next few days, in fact, the tests of the competition for emergency doctors who will be assigned to the Emergency Department will take place.

This is the eighth selection announced by Cardarelli in the last two years; through the previous competitions it was possible to recruit only one doctor, as the only candidate eligible for the selections. This selection, however, in clear contrast with the past, has seen for the first time a discrete response from doctors, given that there are 15 candidates who will be called to take the recruitment tests.

These improvements, the hospital emphasizes, are part of a national context that sees the Emergency Rooms of Italian hospitals in great difficulty due to the serious shortage of medical personnel, especially in the emergency context.

"We are working across the board to improve care at Cardarelli. The delivery of these first facilities is an immediately visible step in the renovation we've begun, both in terms of infrastructure and organization ," said Antonio d'Amore, General Manager of Cardarelli, commenting on the new emergency room facilities, which were fully operational today.

"We have begun ," explains D'Amore, "a long, shared process with the staff to recognize their merit and commitment, with a view to improving care. This is a very complex process because we must manage organizational and infrastructural change while simultaneously managing emergency activities.

In the coming weeks we will be called upon to deal significantly with this difficulty, when the construction site of the Emergency Department will move to the innermost areas of the department, where the examination boxes and patient rest areas are currently located. Our technicians will make every effort to limit the inconvenience to patients and operators, but we will certainly need everyone's cooperation and the understanding of patients to be able to complete the work.

I thank all the staff of the department for the commitment and dedication with which they work day and night to protect and help patients."

Meanwhile, from today, a new operational model has been launched at Cardarelli on the organizational front, introducing the process nurse, a figure that allows a specifically trained nurse to be identified as a specific contact person who is responsible for managing the patient in transit in the Emergency Room.

This is an organizational model used only in two large Italian hospitals. At the same time, “fast tracks” were introduced, rapid management paths for specific pathologies of orthopedic or gynecological interest.
