A real health odyssey was experienced by a 73-year-old man from Positano , resident in the upper hamlet of Nocelle , who, having fallen at home , hit his head and lost consciousness.

Taken by ambulance , in the early afternoon of last Sunday, to the Emergency Room of the “Costa d' Amalfi ” hospital , he was assessed as having syncope due to second level head trauma , for which a cardiological consultation was deemed necessary.
At the Castiglione hospital, the cardiologist on duty was absent , so the patient was loaded into an ambulance and transferred to the Cava de' Tirreni hospital , where he was examined by the specialist (the results were negative).
The Metelliano hospital also requested a neurological consultation : once again in the ambulance bound for the “Ruggi” hospital in Salerno , the unfortunate man needed to remain under observation as a precaution for the night.
With no available bed, he was eventually sent to the Fucito Hospital in Mercato San Severino . Fortunately, no complications arose, and the following day, the patient himself requested discharge.
Problems at the hospital on the Amalfi Coast
These troubles could have been avoided if only the hospital on the Amalfi Coast , despite the recent and frequent absences of the cardiologist on duty, had been recognized as a short-term observation point.
For years, the small coastal hospital was designated a disadvantaged area, but only on paper. In reality, it continues to exist in precarious conditions and without a dignified and definitive organization for full efficiency. But this time, the risk of yet another downgrading appears real.
Adding to the aforementioned difficulties is the shortage of emergency room doctors , on the eve of a new tourist season when the Amalfi Coast is expected to once again be packed with daily tourists. And if the resuscitator is busy transferring a patient by ambulance to another hospital, the emergency room has only one doctor available—the surgeon—for any eventuality.
Just like last Sunday. On December 14, the acting president of the Conference of Mayors of the Amalfi Coast, Luigi Mansi , and the Health Delegate, Andrea Reale, wrote to the general director of the Salerno hospital, Vincenzo D'Amato , outlining the urgent need for interventions to strengthen the "Costa d'Amalfi" facility "in light of the ongoing critical issues that still compromise its full functionality."
