In 2022, Italian families with a supply contract in the protected market spent only bill electric 1.434 euros, that is 108% more than in 2021, and 1.459 euros for gas (+57%).

This is the finding of a survey by facile.it on a sample of 400 electricity and gas supply contracts, taking into account the prices offered in the protected market. According to the analysis, the drop in the price of raw materials recorded at the beginning of 2023 could be a source of hope.

Overall, therefore, between electricity and gas, in 2022 Italians paid out, on average, 2.893 euros per family (compared to 1.616 euros in 2021), but where was the most spent in the country?

In first place is Sardinia, an area where the average consumption per family recorded in 2022 was equal to 3.672 kWh which, considering last year's tariffs under the protection regime, corresponds to a cost of 1.789 euros, that is, 24,7% more than the national average.

Such high consumption is explained by the lack of gas supply in many parts of the island, a situation that is often compensated for by resorting to electric devices, even for heating, with a significant impact on the bill.

Sicily comes in second place, with an average budget of 1.627 euros for an average recorded consumption of 3.339 kWh.

Last on the podium for Campania; in this region 1.519 euros were spent (3.118 kWh). The areas where, on the other hand, electricity consumption was lower, and therefore the bills were lighter, were Liguria (average expenditure 1.176 euros for a consumption of 2.414 kWh), Piedmont (1.289 euros, 2.646 kWh) and Trentino-Alto Adige; here the inhabitants paid 1.314 euros (2.697 kWh).

Even on the gas front, bills are differentiated according to the average consumption recorded. The analysis shows that if on the electricity front the inhabitants of Trentino-Alto Adige are among the luckiest, things are much worse for gas so much so that, last year, they paid the highest bill; on average, 1.729 euros, 18,5% more than the national average, compared to a consumption of 1.352 smc.

Following in the ranking are Emilia-Romagna, where the average consumption per family was 1.287 smc for a total cost of 1.646 euros, and Lombardy (1.639 euros, 1.282 smc). Looking at the ranking in the opposite direction, however, we find Campania, a region where a family, in 2022, spent an average of 1.009 euros (789 smc), Lazio, where the cost of the gas bill was 1.021 euros (799 smc) and Sicily (1.045 euros, 817 smc).

"With the new year, we've seen positive signs for both electricity and gas costs," explains Mario Rasimelli, Managing Director of Utilities at Facile.it. "However, we shouldn't let our guard down, and it's a good idea to continue monitoring our consumption and periodically check the offers available on the market to identify potential savings," he added.
