A pilot project proposed by the Hospital's Medical Directorate and approved by the hospital's management will begin on March 1st. San Giuseppe Moscati of Avellino, to try to improve the flow and management of patients in the emergency department by optimizing nursing resources.

Once the staff training phase is complete, the implementation phase will begin next Wednesday, with the definition of specific tasks for the nurses and healthcare workers assigned to the emergency room. Specifically, the modular nursing model requires the assignment of staff for each patient's triage entry code.

The seven nurses and three healthcare assistants on each shift will be distributed in groups along the pathways identified for each of the five priority codes and will be responsible for specific procedures, taking care of the patient from all points of view and collaborating directly with the bed manager in various aspects: from facilitating turnover towards the operating units in the event of hospitalization, to communicating with family members, to managing relationships with the hospital pharmacy.

A reorganization of procedures and use of spaces through coordinated, multidisciplinary, and cross-disciplinary work should reduce waiting times and length of stay, improve reception and personalize care plans, and ensure greater safety for patients and healthcare workers. "This is one of the initiatives that will be implemented to decongest the Emergency Room," stated Medical Director Rosario Lanzetta.

With the modular nursing project, nurses become the key professionals for managing patient flows, gaining greater autonomy and responsibility, and better evaluating their role. The pilot phase of the project will be constantly monitored, concludes Lanzetta, using various measurement tools. If the results achieved are in line with expectations, we may also consider implementing the new organizational model in other company operating units.
