A cleanup operation in the seaside village will take place on Saturday, February 25th. President Cacace: "All residents are invited to participate."

A major cleanup operation in the seaside village of Puolo will take place next Saturday, February 25th, organized by the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area, with the patronage of the Municipality of Massa Lubrense and the collaboration of Terra delle Sirene, the Massa Youth Forum, the Il Melograno Club of Legambiente, and Fondalicampania Aps.

The volunteers will remove the waste washed up on the beach during the winter storms and then sample it, separate it and deliver it to Terra delle Sirene. But that's not all. Great attention will be paid to plastic, especially microplastics. A monitoring activity useful for understanding more deeply the state of health of a site. The monitoring will be carried out together with Fondalicampania which has already been carrying out this campaign on the problem of microplastics in the Gulf of Naples for months.

"In addition to cleaning and remediation, it is also important to monitor the environmental health of a place - explain the Punta Campanella MPA - The Puolo marine area is included in the "Natura 2000" sites, the most important instrument of the European Union for the protection of habitats and species and one of the largest conservation areas in the world.

The Punta Campanella MPA is a partner in a European project for the protection of marine sites of Rete 2000, Lifeseanet, coordinated by Legambiente and co-financed by the EU. Monitoring the state of the ecosystem, habitats and species and preventing beached waste from returning to the sea is therefore very important to improve the environmental protection of the site”.

"Anyone who wants to participate is welcome - the invitation to citizens by the President of the Punta Campanella MPA, Lucio Cacace - Cleaning the shores and beaches is an activity that the Marine Protected Area has been carrying out for years, always. This initiative is in synergy with the municipality, Terra delle Sirene and some local associations. Keeping our seaside villages clean is very important and at the same time raises everyone's awareness of the problem of waste and especially plastic in the sea. A problem that we all have the obligation to address and reduce to best protect the marine ecosystem".
