Thirty-one defendants, including alleged top brass and associates, are on trial in the massive trial of the Mallardo clan, which began today in the bunker courtroom of Poggioreale prison.
During the preliminary hearing, 24 defendants chose to be judged with the abbreviated procedure and, through their lawyers, presented a specific request to office 34 of the investigating judge of Naples.
On February 16, the judge will hear the considerations of the Prosecutor's Office (represented by Deputy Prosecutor Antonella Serio).
The list of crimes contested is long, all aggravated by the mafia method: extortion, illegal possession and carrying of firearms, false attestations in documents intended for the judicial authority, personal aiding and abetting, fictitious registration of assets, use of money of illicit origin, self-laundering, aggravated fraud for the obtaining of public funds.
Among those who asked to be judged with the alternative rite is also Michele Olimpio, believed to be the regent of the clan considered to be part of the so-called Secondigliano Alliance together with the Contini and Licciardi clans.
The request for a summary trial was also filed by the regent's wife, Lyudmylla Pylypenko (like her husband, defended by lawyers Celestino Gentile and Giuliano Russo), who according to investigators acted as a "liaison officer" between the regent in prison and his affiliates.
Six defendants have instead chosen to face the trial: Antonio Cristiano, Angela D'Alterio, Anna and Luigi Micillo, Vincenzo Olimpio and the Ukrainian Volodymyr Trybushuk (defended by the lawyer Fabrizio De Maio), accused of having used money, goods or utilities of illicit origin used to pay Michele Olimpio's wife hired 'fictitiously', according to the investigators, as an employee of his bar.
