This is what the president of the Assize Court of Ravenna Michele Leoni wrote in the reasons for the acquittals pronounced regarding the murder of 21-year-old Pier Paolo Minguzzi – in addition to being a conscripted carabiniere in the Ferrara area, also a university student and the son of a family of fruit and vegetable entrepreneurs from Alfonsine, in the Ravenna area – kidnapped and killed on the night between 20 and 21 April 1987 while he was returning home after having accompanied his girlfriend during a short Easter leave.
The boy's body - as reported by the local press - had resurfaced in the Po di Volano (Ferrara) on the following May 300st: his captors had tied him up and weighted him down to a heavy metal grate. And, even though they knew he was already dead, they had continued to ask his family for a ransom of XNUMX million lire.

The three had previously been convicted, and served their sentences, for extortion of 300 million lire from another local businessman: during a carabinieri stakeout in July 1987, a young soldier originally from Caserta had been killed by a bullet fired by one of the three.
