Winter cyclone: ​​wind, rain and snow even in the plains

Arctic air is currently breaking out in Italy.

As expected, icy currents swept through the Bora (Julian Alps) early Sunday, ushering in a typically wintery weather pattern. The cold air, reaching the Mediterranean Sea, has generated a cyclonic vortex that will settle over Italy in the coming days.

Throughout the week our country will have to deal with this cyclonic spinning top that will dispense a lot of rain, storms, wind and even snowfall at very low altitudes, in some cases even in the plains. The trajectory of the vortex now seems to be outlined, that is, from Sardinia it will head towards the central-southern regions.

We can therefore expect often unstable and occasionally disturbed weather, especially in central and southern Italy and, in some cases, also in the north. Winds will rotate counterclockwise around the vortex, causing cold Bora and Grecale winds to blow in the north, predominantly from the southern quadrants in central and southern Italy.

The clouds loaded with precipitation will also rotate counterclockwise around the vortex, meaning that the regions most affected by the atmospheric phenomena will be Sardinia, Lazio, Campania, Umbria and at times even Basilicata, Puglia and Sicily.

Precipitation will mainly occur in the form of rain or thunderstorms in the Central and Southern regions, while in the North, given the very low temperatures, it could snow down to the plains in Piedmont and Emilia.

However, snow will also fall in the central Apennines and in Sardinia, starting from 7-900 meters, and above 1200-1400 meters in the south. This situation will last at least until Friday the 3rd: then high pressure could once again conquer Italy, bringing sunshine to most regions, but in a temperature context more typical of late winter than spring.
