The Management Board of the European Commission has decided to suspend the use of the application TikTok on their company devices and on personal devices registered with the Commission's mobile telephone service.
This is what is stated in a press release issued by the European Commission. The measure, the note reads, "It aims to protect the Commission from cybersecurity threats and actions that could be exploited for cyberattacks against the Commission's business environment. Security developments on other social media platforms will also be kept under constant review."
The reasons why this decision was taken, he said Sonya Gospodinova, spokesperson for the Committee on Internal Market, Defence Industry and Space, "is to increase the Commission's cybersecurity.
The measure also aims to protect the Commission from cybersecurity threats and actions that can be exploited for cyber attacks against the Commission.
This decision, he added, "It has been carefully analyzed, considered, and adopted by the Commission's Administrative Board. I can say that it is either a temporary measure or a measure under constant review and subject to possible reassessment.", concluded Gospodinova.
"This is the first time that a specific decision has been associated with a request to delete an application, in this case TikTok, from the Commission's devices, and to ask staff who use their private devices for work purposes to delete it from their phones.", instead, the spokesperson of the European Commission stated, Eric Mamer. "Of course, we will inform the other institutions of our decision.", he added.
If TikTok poses a risk to public employees, it means there's a risk for everyone. If, on the other hand, there are no security risks, this should apply erga omnes and not just to the Public Administration.
On this very topic, last January I submitted a parliamentary question, which I hope will receive a comprehensive and thorough response from the government. In light of what is happening and following the decisions of the United States and Europe, I believe the time has come for the government to seriously consider and carefully evaluate the issue.
It's not a question of censorship, but of guaranteeing Italian citizens every certainty in terms of the security of their information." So in a note Deborah Bergamini, Forza Italia MP and vice-president of the EPP at the Council of Europe.
"The security of our data and the information traveling on our devices," he warns, "is not a game, but the primary security challenge of our time. I have full confidence in our security systems and hope that, in the national interest and that of the social media giant's employees, this issue will be clarified as soon as possible.", concludes Bergamini.
