In 2021 Napoli It is the capital city with the highest number of cats registered in the registry office, 80.740 of which 21.050 are in feline colonies.
Taranto follows with 12.566 cats and Brescia with 8.902. Among the virtuous examples, the Lombardy Region, through regional law, from 1 January 2020 made it mandatory to register every cat that becomes part of a family.
On National Cat Day, Legambiente pays tribute to this feline with the focus 'A-mici in Città' (Friends in the City), which takes stock, with data in hand (for 2021), of this independent yet beloved and widespread pet in Italy, and what Italian governments are doing for their well-being and protection.

Cat Day: Cat Friendly Cities
Still in relation to the feline registry, in 2021, the municipality of Sant'Angelo in Lomellina (Pavia) declared having more than one cat for every two resident citizens, followed by the municipality of Zeddiani (Oristano) with just under one cat for every two resident citizens and the municipality of San Pietro in Cerro (Piacenza) with a similar situation.
As for adoptions, in 2021 the municipality of Trieste declared the highest number of cats given up for adoption, 540, followed by Pistoia (434) and Prato (230). Speaking of feline colonies, the municipality of Naples has 2107, followed by Ravenna (990) and Carpi, in the province of Modena, with 853 colonies. The municipality of San Giovanni in Persiceto (Bologna), on the other hand, declares having three health catteries, essential structures for adequately taking care of sick or injured stray cats.
On National Cat Day, Legambiente has chosen to award the 2023 'A-Mici in Città' plaque, extending a sincere and heartfelt thank you to the volunteers of the 'Mondo Gatto' association in Milan who, with love, commitment, perseverance, and attention, have cared for the city's less fortunate cats for nearly forty years.
