The double-sided sidewalk is born in Vomero

In recent times, one of the problems that most afflict the Neapolitan hill district of Vomero It is determined by the presence of numerous landslides along the sidewalks.

This forces pedestrians and motorists into a real slog, waiting for maintenance work that is requested repeatedly but which is then slow to be carried out.

The complaint comes from Gennaro Capodanno, president of the Comitato Valori Colliri, former president of the Vomero district, who has long been reporting to the public administration the inconvenience suffered by passers-by and users of two- and four-wheeled vehicles due to the disastrous state of many roads in the hilly municipality, full of potholes and depressions, including through a Facebook group founded with the emblematic title "Potholes in Naples: see Naples and then... fall," which has over 1.800 members. Among these roads is Via Morghen, one of the most beautiful and ancient arteries of Vomero, which has, however, long been in a state of decay and abandonment, repeatedly reported without any operational response from the competent municipal offices.

"This morning," Capodanno emphasizes, "as reported to me by several residents, workers from the company hired by the city administration to repair a reported depression in a section of the sidewalk in front of the town hall, near the intersection with Via Scarlatti, finally appeared on the sidewalk in front of the town hall. But instead of removing the affected section of paving, made of porphyry cubes, eliminating the damage by leveling the subgrade, and finally resurfacing the cobblestones, they simply poured a layer of black asphalt, the type normally used for roadways. A real patch-up, which left more than a few people upset about the work being carried out in a manner that was, to say the least, questionable, and with results that were a real eyesore."

"So," Capodanno quips bitterly, "the ancient Vomero road has been effectively transformed into a true two-sided artery, with a checkerboard-style sidewalk paving, partly in gray cubes and partly in black asphalt. A new model of street furniture, aesthetically unpleasant, to say the least, which we hope will not be exported elsewhere."

Regarding the Capodanno matter, Capodanno is requesting the intervention of the relevant authorities to proceed promptly with the necessary and appropriate work. This work will aim to standardize the pavement along Via Morghen, which will be achieved by restoring the original porphyry cobblestones, thus eliminating the asphalt pour. It also calls for greater vigilance to prevent—as has unfortunately already occurred and been reported in the past—the same procedures being applied on other roads undergoing maintenance.
