General practitioner Alfonso Tumbarello was arrested by the Carabinieri and investigated for having aided and abetted the fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro.
According to the prosecution, Tumbarello would have written the prescriptions to allow Andrea Bonafede, the alias used by Messina Denaro, to access health care to fight cancer. The arrest of the doctor was ordered by the investigating judge of Palermo Alfredo Montalto, who accepted the request of the Palermo DDA.

He is accused of external competition in mafia association and ideological forgery. The arrest was ordered by the Palermo prosecutor's office and carried out by the Carabinieri of the ROS. Bonafede's cousin is charged with the crimes of aiding and abetting and procuring non-compliance with a sentence, aggravated by having aided Cosa Nostra.
