The Capaci massacre? “Commemorations of this shit”. Speaking is Matteo Messina Denaro.
The voice message was recorded on May 23, 2022, on the thirtieth anniversary of the attack along the Palermo-Capaci highway in which Judge Giovanni Falcone, his wife Francesca Morvillo , also a magistrate, and the escort agents Vito Schifani , Rocco Dicillo and Antonio Montinaro lost their lives , as well as 23 other injured hit by the firepower of an explosive charge that ripped apart the highway.
On that day last year, the thirtieth anniversary of the massacre, the boss found himself stuck in traffic and sent the shocking audio to a group chat: "My phone doesn't have service this morning. And here I am, stuck with four flat tires—not punctured ones, that is—on the asphalt, not moving for the commemorations of this damn thing."
The head of the Castelvetrano district, once a protégé of Totò Riina and still a fugitive at the time, was in a car traveling on the highway toward Palermo near Villagrazia di Carini , a hamlet of the Sicilian capital within the metropolitan area. At that moment, stuck in traffic, he snapped a photo of the convoy of cars, also sending the group a voice message insulting the most famous anti-mafia magistrate in Italian history, complaining about the delays caused by the commemorations for the Capaci massacre.
In the voice message, released by the Carabinieri ROS (Special Operations Unit) after analyzing the seized phones, Messina Denaro can be heard speaking to the group about a person whose whereabouts he doesn't know, in a conversational tone. However, his tone changes abruptly, becoming harsh and icy when he mentions Judge Falcone . The Cosa Nostra boss was sentenced to life imprisonment in the first instance as the instigator of the Capaci massacre , and the appeal trial is underway in Caltanissetta.
Messina Denaro shock audio, Falcone Foundation: "Happy to have made him furious"
“On May 23, 2022, on the thirtieth anniversary of the Capaci massacre, we were in the square at the Foro Italico and we delayed Matteo Messina Denaro. We are truly proud of it!”. This is what we read on the Facebook page of the Falcone Foundation, regarding the diffusion of the audio of Messina Denaro.
“There were many of us,” the Foundation continues, “Palermo blocked by tens of thousands of students and citizens, all united in the name of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino and all the victims of the mafia. In the messages to his lover, Matteo Messina Denaro was “furious” because he was stuck in traffic, missing his appointments.
We will continue to “block” Palermo and other cities with great joy, we will infuriate other mafiosi and we will be happy about it. Just as we will continue to ask for maximum severity against the bosses, reiterating the value of 41bis without ifs and buts”.
