Naples is now in real danger of losing its historic Metropolitan cinema (now the Martos) on Via Chiaia, the crisis of which had already been evident for some time.
Banca San Paolo Imi, which owns the building that houses the cinema-theatre in Palazzo Cellamare, intends to clear out the Metropolitan and replace the tenant in order to build a bingo hall or a shopping centre and earn much more money.
“We will oppose this decision with all our strength. The Metropolitan is a cultural and emotional symbol of the city and must remain, losing it would mean letting another piece of Naples go.
Furthermore, however, we will appeal to the Superintendency as the area is tied to the presence of a cinema or a theatre. Another Bingo hall or a shopping centre? No, thank you, here we need culture to maintain the spirit of identity and not other forms of consumerism that make the cities all identical to each other.”– this is the appeal of the Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli and the radio host of La Radiazza Gianni Simioli.
