This morning, at the Gaiola Underwater Park, the director of the Park Maurizio Simeone and the president of Marevivo Rosalba Giugni, placed a plaque in testimony of the Association's commitment to the establishment, in 2002, of the first Underwater Archaeological Parks of the Mediterranean of Baia and Gaiola.

Present at the event were the maritime director of Campania Admiral Pietro G. Vella, the Logistics Commander of the Navy Admiral Salvatore Vitiello and the Regional Councillor for Tourism Felice Casucci.

An action as symbolic as it is concrete, in support of the sea and its protection, thanks to a synergy of forces, objectives and activities by Marevivo and the Gaiola Underwater Park for the protection of the Blue Continent, a fundamental resource for the life of the entire planet.

The Gaiola Underwater Park is a national marine protected area, where the inestimable biodiversity that characterizes its seabed is added to its immense archaeological heritage, in one of the most evocative landscapes of the Gulf of Naples.

Like the other 30 Italian marine protected areas, it represents a bulwark for the protection of our sea, unfortunately increasingly threatened by human activities.

The Gaiola Underwater Park, managed by the Gaiola Interdisciplinary Studies Center onlus, in particular, has demonstrated in these 20 years how the care and strenuous protection of the marine-coastal environment, accompanied by awareness and environmental education, can recover an area that has long been in a state of degradation and transform it into a virtuous model of sustainable use.

All this in a difficult context, such as the metropolitan one of the City of Naples, so that this treasure chest of history and biodiversity can reach future generations. The first stone in this direction was thrown by Marevivo that over 20 years ago spent itself for the establishment of the first two Submerged Archaeological Parks of Baia and Gaiola, starting this saving process of recovery and valorization.

“Too often this city and this nation forget about those who, working from the bottom, are able to trigger change with concrete actions. Marevivo is today one of the most important Italian environmental associations, for almost 40 years a staunch bulwark for the protection of our sea and certainly does not need honorary plaques to assert itself.

However, in this case we were particularly keen to affix this plaque not only to redeem from oblivion the work of Marevivo for the birth of the first two Submerged Parks, but also to shine a light on the troubled events of sabotage and intimidation that accompanied the birth of the Park and which in various ways continue today and of which Marevivo was a victim at the time", declared Maurizio Simeone, director of the Amp Parco Sommerso di Gaiola.

"It is a great emotion for us at Marevivo to be here to affix the commemorative plaque that testifies to our commitment to the birth of this Submerged Archaeological Park, a true pearl of the Mediterranean. In these years, many battles, much work and much passion for the protection of a precious place that fascinates us for its beauty and incredible history and that still today needs many restoration and redevelopment actions.

We will continue to enthusiastically support the project of the Park Director who in all these years has carried forward the baton with tenacity and courage", declared Rosalba Giugni, President of Marevivo.
