New appointment of the Nest theatre season with Mamy Blues a project by and with Luna Romani, winner of the FRINGE OFF 2021 award.

Luna Romani brings to the stage the story of her pregnancy, a moment in which, in the life of every woman, everything changes. An intense monologue born “at night, between a foggy thought, exhausting sleep. Between a breastfeeding and a rocking.”

The text will be accompanied by precious interviews projected on the scene of new mothers who alternate with the story, giving us their direct testimony, opening the barriers and painfully telling the truth of those hidden thoughts, hidden by the modesty of a motherhood that in the sight of everyone seems perfect, but that within the domestic walls is not.

“The moment a child is born, a mother is also being born. She has never existed before. The woman existed but the mother, never. A mother is something absolutely new.”

Director's notes

Eight years ago I became a mother for the first time. I didn't even feel like a woman yet. There wasn't even the transition from girl to woman. I became a mother straight away. Without even having had time to say goodbye. The moment the test was positive, I wasn't fully aware of what was happening because I was stunned by the wonder of creation. There it was, it had already begun: the wait. That's exactly the moment when everything changes. Like a click from which you can no longer go back.

It is not like imagining changing dimension. It is really changing it. It is passing to the other side. Forever. Whether you will have a child wanted, unwanted, if you have only imagined it, or if you will never have one, each of these paths, chosen or suffered, will leave marks that will characterize the plot within which the woman will move in the world. Hence the desire to tell this change. This passage of state. Talk to women about women.

Of women who become mothers. Telling the truth that is too often taboo. That it is not the idyllic period that everyone fantasizes. Because we talk too little about what really happens when you become a mother.

The loneliness of a mother in the face of infinite impotence and omnipotence. The loneliness and fear of finding yourself facing yourself. This monologue was born at night, between a foggy thought, exhausting sleep. Between a breastfeeding and a rocking. I thought about mothers who at that moment were like me, who were sleepy, very, too much and couldn't sleep, but who madly loved the motivation that kept them awake. So I got the desire to look for these mothers and together with them tell them clearly the truth of what happens to a mother.

I imagined giving voice to all the women who cannot speak because words are often lacking. Because they no longer have time, they are too tired, they cannot or are confused. Because they are depressed and their hormones are rapidly declining. Because they feel ugly, fat and old and they are lost, but they do not realize that they cannot be found because they are searching in the wrong way because they desire the one from before, which they miss terribly almost to the point of being left breathless. Instead they only find the mother. And they have to rebuild the woman.

That continues to get lost again and again and again. This is why I need to write this text accompanied by the precious interviews of new mothers, projected on the scene, who alternate with my story, giving us their direct testimony, opening the barriers and painfully telling the truth of those hidden thoughts, hidden by the modesty of a motherhood that in the sight of everyone seems perfect, but that within the domestic walls is not.
