The Archaeological Park of Pompeii is also participating this year in the campaign “M'illumino di Meno. Energy saving and sustainable lifestyles day”, which Rai Radio2 with Caterpillar has organized annually since 2005 to spread the culture of environmental sustainability and resource saving.
Pompeii will participate in the initiative today, February 16, 2023, by turning off alternately and randomly, for a few seconds - between 20 and 21 pm - the 14 circuits that make up the entire perimeter lighting system of the ancient city, naturally guaranteeing the minimum levels of safety.
In line with this trend, the Park has already adopted a Green policy for some years, both in terms of the integration and reorganization of the greenery of the domus, with the reconstruction of the Pompeian gardens, according to historical scientific criteria, in the choice of the species planted, and through the activation of the new perimeter and internal lighting system of some buildings, completely LED and therefore with great energy savings.
This system, consisting of 361 lighting fixtures, has allowed a significant reduction (over 65%) in terms of electricity consumption, as well as maintenance costs (longer life of the lamps) and effective and efficient night-time operation of the cameras.
Furthermore, in various parts of the Park, photovoltaic tiles have been installed, imitating the original ones, capable of producing electrical energy following exposure to solar radiation.
The tiles power the new advanced LED lighting systems, which, thanks to the reduced spectral emission of the blue components, do not affect the deterioration of the decorative apparatus and limit the possible degenerative risks of the retina. Furthermore, through the light they emit and by exploiting the innovative wireless technology (Li-Fi or Light Fidelity), which uses the light waves emitted by an LED bulb instead of radio waves, they are able to transmit data and information.
The system represents an advanced method of enjoyment, safety and valorization of cultural heritage, characterized by a great attention to energy and environmental aspects.
