Leonardo CEO Alessandro Profumo was awarded an honorary degree in Materials Engineering today at the University “Federico II” in Naples.
The ceremony was held in the Aula Magna of the University's conference center, in Via Partenope. It was the rector of “Federico II”, Matteo Lorito, who recalled the collaborative relationships for training between the Neapolitan university institution and Leonardo.
At the end of the ceremony, Profumo, remembering that his father, Aldo, would have wanted him to be an engineer, was moved when he collected the parchment.
“In the history of Italian innovation, Naples has represented a true 'city of knowledge', which has fueled the country's industrial renaissance and its rapid entry into the club of advanced nations. All this, in the name of a global and interdisciplinary vision of innovation”.
Leonardo's CEO, Alessandro Profumo, said this during the lecture held on the occasion of the awarding of the honorary degree in Materials Engineering at the “Federico II” University of Naples.
“During the years of the economic miracle, while Italian technology was reaching fundamental milestones in mechanics, aerospace and chemistry, Naples offered a favorable environment for scientific research and technical-industrial applications in the most diverse fields, from physics to cybernetics, passing through materials science”, Profumo observed.
And then he remembered that “it is a tradition that continues today: with the technological hub of San Giovanni a Teduccio, for example, which represents a development model for the whole of Southern Italy, capable of connecting universities, businesses and start-ups to promote technological transfer and higher education”.
Leonardo, Profumo said again, “it is an integral part of the Campania ecosystem, thanks to its ability to interconnect the world of production with the entire innovation chain, from universities and research centers to the many SMEs that contribute to creating the technological excellence of Made in Italy in the world. A model that aims to support inclusive and long-term growth, with repercussions for the entire society”.
In Campania, Leonardo is present with 6 main offices, relies on a supply chain of more than 300 local companies and supports over 16.000 direct, indirect and induced employees, a commitment that has not failed even in the most critical phases of recent years.
“Every year we have involved young engineers in concrete innovation paths linked to Leonardo’s business areas; and it is no coincidence that many of them have been hired by our Group, most in the Aerostructures Division, others in the Aircraft Division and at Leonardo Logistics”.
