The initiative, organized by the Marine Protected Area, saw the participation this morning of dozens of volunteers from local groups and associations.
Cotton swabs and sticks, bottle caps, more than 50 plastic bottles, Styrofoam, discarded medical supplies (syringes and masks), cigarette butts, coffee cups, glass bottles, and a variety of plastic materials of various types, shapes, and sizes. This is what was collected during the cleanup, organized by the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area (AMP ), which took place this morning in Puolo with the participation of dozens of volunteers from local groups and associations, including the Massa Lubrense Youth Forum, Legambiente Vico Equense, and Fondalicampania Aps.
Terra delle Sirene operators have collected the material, about 250kg, and will dispose of it. Also present at the initiative were Sonia Bernardo, Councilor for the Environment of the Municipality of Massa, Antonino Di Palma, head of Terra delle Sirene and Luigi Cuomo of Penisola Verde.
Among the waste collected were a beach chair, a tire and a large fishing net. All material that, if it had ended up in the sea, would have caused damage and pollution.
Samples collected during the cleanup operation are also being analyzed for microplastics.
“We thank all the volunteers who joined this initiative, which is essential for taking care of our beaches and the sea,” emphasizes the President of the Punta Campanella MPA, Lucio Cacace, who participated in the cleanup. “Puolo is part of the Natura2000 sites protected by the European Union. And this is also why we are involved in a European project, Life SeaNet, which has the objective of protecting these marine sites of community interest through better management and more effective tools.”
