The management and enhancement of the Complex and the Park of the Royal Bourbon Powder Mill of Scafati are among the interventions that the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, which has jurisdiction over the area, has been implementing since 2019, and which were also the subject of this morning's meeting between the Prefect Antonio D'Acunto, Prefectural Commissioner of the Municipality of Scafati and the Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel.
A useful meeting to examine the actions already undertaken and in the starting phase such as the redevelopment of the former drying house started in recent days and the social agriculture project, in order to jointly enhance one of the most beautiful monumental complexes with annexed historical and natural park of the area, and counteract acts of vandalism that have affected the place over time.
The Royal Powder Factory complex was transformed into the Experimental Tobacco Institute after 1870 and, closed definitively after the 1980 earthquake, it underwent progressive abandonment with vandalization of the buildings and illegal dumping of waste.
Already in 2019, the Park began the remediation of over 300 tons of waste with a series of collateral interventions for the safety and remediation of the Park area, which extends for almost 12 hectares.
In 2021-2022, the reclamation and maintenance of the large green area began with the care of a first part of the double-row plane tree avenue.
The current redevelopment project in the southwestern area of the Park, with an investment of approximately 1,5 million euros and now in its final stages, will allow over 5 hectares of the complex to be returned to public use.
It is precisely in this area that the social agriculture activity will be organized, which the Park, in collaboration with the Il Tulipano social cooperative that deals with children with cognitive disabilities and autism and the Di Landro agricultural company, has set as the object of the Confagricoltura tender of which they were the winners.
Another important redevelopment project started in recent days will involve the Pavilion of the former Tobacco Drying Plant, on the edge of the redeveloped area. It is an extraordinary building with a single nave, approximately 60x13 meters wide and full height, with a volume of approximately 9.800 cubic meters, an extremely interesting example of contemporary industrial architecture.
Dating back to the 1,5s, the building will undergo a complex structural redevelopment that will lead it to host part of the archaeological deposits of the Pompeii Park that can be visited, as well as a venue for temporary exhibitions and events. The construction site for the structural redevelopment was started with a commitment of approximately 2,6 million euros, as a prelude to the intervention of organizing and setting up the deposits, the design of which is currently underway with a commitment of expenditure for the works, already planned by the Pompeii Archaeological Park, for over XNUMX million euros.
“All the interventions implemented and others to come are part of a strategy of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii that has as its horizon the complete recovery of the monumental complex, according to a comprehensive intervention plan that, in the primary objective of returning the asset to the Public and the Community, also wants to reactivate its historical vocations with particular attention to the agricultural potential and natural excellence of the territory. – Declares the Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel. – And in the perspective of relaunching the territory, joint action with the Institutions is fundamental.”
