A lighting system to revive the ancient Scoglio di Rovigliano, located in the waters between Torre Annunziata and Castellammare di Stabia. This is the project that the Rotary Club Torre Annunziata Oplonti is working on, which in recent days has put the idea down on paper, sending it to the various competent bodies in the matter.

"Today the Scoglio di Rovigliano is completely abandoned and forgotten - says Gaspare Coppola, president of the Rotary Club Torre Annunziata Oplonti - and yet it represents one of the symbols of our coast and our landscape. It is a characterizing element and enhancing it means giving prestige to the entire coastal strip. For this reason we have promoted a proposal that we have forwarded not only to the Campania Region but also to the municipalities, the port authorities, the Superintendency and the offices of the Great Pompeii Project.

The idea is to create a modern lighting system that allows visibility and therefore enjoyment of the monument and the entire islet even at night. After all - continues President Coppola - one of the reasons why the facades of historic buildings or monuments are illuminated is precisely to preserve them, enhance them and prevent them from being forgotten". Currently the building located on the Scoglio is privately owned. In fact, the history of the "Petra Herculis" is very troubled and leads to the present day, with the heirs of the Malafronte and Brigante families as current owners.

“We had a meeting with the heirs of the two families – explains Gaspare Coppola – and they appreciated our commitment and our proposal”. The Rotary Club Torre Annunziata Oplonti since its foundation, it is written in a note, “has been characterized by the promotion of the cultural heritage of our territory, through events and project activities that, over the years, have involved institutions, associations and schools of the city of Torre Annunziata and the Vesuvian municipalities”.

“In line with a service activity that has characterized Rotary International for 118 years (today marks the anniversary of its birth on February 23, 1905), the Rotary Club Torre Annunziata Oplonti, operating in the area since 2019 – the note highlights – intends to carry out an action to relaunch the monumental site called “Petra Herculis”, commonly known as “Scoglio di Rovigliano”, symbol of the city and characterizing element of the landscape”.

"We have sent a formal request to the various bodies not only illustrating the idea, but asking for the convening of an inter-institutional table to establish a common path. Our proposal, which we naturally believe represents a starting point for a broader discussion, consists in the creation of a stable, completely green lighting system, through the installation of LED lights and solar panels with an accumulation system. The lights, positioned on the different sides of the Scoglio, would allow adequate visibility of the monument from any angle. This intervention - concludes Coppola - we believe can strengthen the charm of a panorama that is unique in the world".
