The devastating death toll has reached almost 20 earthquake in Syria and TürkiyeThe latest death toll reaches 19.823, adding the 16.546 deaths in Türkiye announced by President Recep Tayyp Erdogan and the 3.277 in Syria.
At least 3.868 people have died in Syria alone following two violent earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.6 on February 6 that struck the north of the country and southern Turkey.
This was reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a non-governmental organization based in London but with a vast network of sources on the ground, specifying that 1.678 deaths were reported in the areas under the control of the government of Damascus, and another 2.190 in the regions controlled by groups opposing Syrian President Bashar al Assad.
The injured number at least 4.000, SOHR reported, adding that another 375 Syrians, not included in the toll, lost their lives in Turkey and their bodies were later transferred to Syria. Some 120 towns and villages in central, northwestern and western Syria were hit by the quake.
As the death toll continues to rise, many citizens are contributing to search and rescue operations, faced with the inability of hospitals and rescue teams to “absorb the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe,” adds Sohr.
