Precautionary measure of the obligation to report to the judicial police: this is what the investigating judge of Rome has ordered against two people seriously suspected of aggravated fraud.
The facts date back to January 24th when - precisely in the context of a service dedicated to combating the phenomenon of scams against the elderly - a patrol of the State Police of the fifth section of the Flying Squad, positioned near the Roma Est motorway toll booth, had noticed a Fiat Panda passing by, in the direction of Naples.
Initial investigations had allowed them to verify that individuals with criminal records had been identified on board the car - registered to a rental company based in Naples.
The officers, therefore, decided to stop the car for a check and the driver, probably realizing he was being followed, after slowing down, stopped in the emergency lane, while the passenger threw a cell phone out of the window and then a package which, later recovered, contained gold objects.
The two were identified and were found to be of Campanian origin, respectively 23 and 20 years old. Inside the vehicle, the officers found silver objects and a Banco Posta card, and seized a sum of 700 euros and 2 cell phones.
Subsequent investigations led to the identification of the owner of the objects found, an elderly lady who had been the victim of fraud. When tracked down, she said that, that same day, a man had called her, introducing himself as her nephew, telling her that he was at the post office to collect a package containing electronic devices and that, to do so, he urgently needed a loan.
While the woman was on the phone, a fake postal worker showed up at her house to collect the cash. The victim, after opening the door, let the fake postman in and gave him 100 euros, a Banco Posta card, and all the gold and silver objects she had at home that were necessary – according to the latter – to pay her nephew's legal fees.
The man, therefore, left the house, not before stopping with his accomplice at a post office where they withdrew the sum of 600 euros using the victim's Banco Posta. The Rome prosecutor's office requested and obtained from the investigating judge the confirmation of the precautionary measure already applied after the validation of the arrest by the Tivoli court, namely the obligation to report to the police.
