It had been closed for seven years, now - after careful restoration work which involved most of the chapels and the roof - it will reopen and become a point of reference for the students of the "Federico II" University of NapoliIt is the Royal Pontifical Basilica of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli (inside Palazzo San Giacomo), a true treasure trove of art little known to Neapolitans and owned by the Royal Archconfraternity of the Mount of the Blessed Sacrament of Spanish Nobles.
The chapel will be accessible thanks to a protocol signed with the rector of the Federico II University, Matteo Lorito. "Federico II thus strengthens its mission to support and promote the enjoyment of the city's historical heritage," explained Rector Lorito. "We will contribute to the reopening," he added, "but above all, we will fill it with content: young people will come, and our doctoral students will study the marvelous works. And it will become a venue for conferences, conventions, and guided tours, including those open to tourists."
The governor delegate of the archconfraternity, Giuseppe de Vargas Machuca, who signed the protocol with the rector, expressed his satisfaction with the agreement, emphasizing that "the main goal is to return to the city a monument that few know about and make it accessible from a cultural standpoint and also through social projects."
