He was successfully operated on Santobono Mouhamadou, a 3-year-old Senegalese boy from Naples, had undergone numerous surgical procedures since birth in his country to correct hypospadias, a congenital malformation that originates during fetal life and is characterized by the abnormal development of the last portion of the urethral duct.

The little patient, following the operations that did not prove to be curative, reported severe disorders that required a delicate surgical revision. non-profit organization Emergency Smiles took care of his case: the little boy arrived in Italy and was operated on at the Plastic Surgery Unit and Pediatric Burns Center of the company Santobono Pausilipon di Napoli directed by the doctor Marcello Zamparelli which was supported by Fabio dell'Otto, pediatric surgeon.

Due to the scarcity of local tissue, which was sacrificed in previous surgeries performed in Senegal, it was also necessary to remove a portion of mucosa for the reconstruction of the urethra, which will be completed, as the doctors hope, within about three months.

The postoperative course is uneventful. Mouhamadou is doing well and will remain in Italy for postoperative check-ups and to complete the complex reconstruction of his urethra. Once the surgery is complete, the little boy will finally be able to lead a better life and return to his normal life. Senegal where he will meet his little brother who will be born in August.

The intervention, the non-profit organization emphasizes, was possible thanks to the general director Rodolfo Conenna and to the medical director Vincent Jordan, who have shown great sensitivity and willingness to support the humanitarian initiative, explains Fabio Massimo Abenavoli, maxillofacial surgeon and president of Emergenza Sorrisi.

"During our missions in various countries around the world, we often encounter patients who cannot be operated on locally, and we believe it's very important in these cases to work in synergy with other organizations and create solidarity networks that allow us to treat these children and perform delicate and complex operations like the one Mouhamadou underwent in Naples."
