Via Krupp, the super-panoramic road on the island of Capri that has been closed for years, will reopen in June.
It's the mayor's announcement Marino Lembo and the administrators of theBlue Island. "Work has already begun on the rocky coast of Marina Piccola for the reopening of the historic Via Krupp., we read in a note released this afternoon.
The road had been closed about a decade ago due to rockfall, partly to prevent public safety. Work began today, awarded to a company that participated in a tender issued by the Municipality of Capri, establishing a public-private partnership that will last five years, with a total investment of approximately four million.
"This way," Mayor Lembo explains, "Via Krupp will be managed by the Municipality of Capri, which will retain ownership, will ensure its cleanliness and maintenance, and will retain the right to organize events and demonstrations without restrictions. The Partnership will then assign the concessionaire company responsibility for managing the defense works, maintaining the rocky ridge, monitoring, and forecasting adverse conditions.
This division of responsibilities and competences between the Municipality and the Concessionaire is the innovative formula that brings together everyone's interests." Moreover, the mayor explains, access to Via Krupp is free, both for tourists and for the island's citizens: no ticket is required, as envisaged by "old unsuccessful plans".
So, from June, Capri and its visitors will once again be able to enjoy the breathtaking view that can be admired from that corner of the island carved into the rock, which Krupp donated to the people of Capri in 1902 and which was designed by the Neapolitan architect Emilio Mayer.
A piece of news welcomed with enthusiasm by the tour operators who are once again including via Krupp in their itineraries, but also by the islanders. The road will remain open continuously from June to September and during the Christmas period, day and night. In autumn and winter, maintenance and improvement works on the defence works will be carried out.
