The preliminary hearing judge of the court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere has acquitted the former mayor of Capua Carmine Antropoli of the charge of environmental disaster in relation to the discharge of waste water into the Volturno River.
The former mayor, a well-known head physician at the Cardarelli hospital in Naples, was charged by the prosecution with poor maintenance of the sewage lifting and purification systems, which, due to the malfunctioning of the systems, would have ended up directly in the river, polluting it.
Antropoli was acquitted at the end of the abbreviated trial for "not having committed the crime", while the other former mayor of Capua Eduardo Centore, the manager Francesco Greco and Eleonora Castri, owner of the company that was in charge of the lifting systems serving the sewer network, are on trial with the ordinary trial, before the Court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere.
From the analyses carried out by Arpac, with samples taken near the two largest pumping plants serving the Capua sewer system (Borgo Santella and Via Giardini), high concentrations of the Escherichia coli bacterium and total surfactants of ammoniacal nitrogen and oxygen emerged, clearly linked to the presence in the water of organic substances coming from the city sewers, without any purification treatment.
