At dusk it takes flight and discovers the poisons poured into the earth: it is born in Marigliano, in the province of Naples, the monitoring system that - using an infrared drone, a sophisticated algorithm, and artificial intelligence - has so far mapped 55% of the so-called Land of Fires.
Everything revolves around the aircraft, equipped with a special camera, a highly sophisticated algorithm, and artificial intelligence (AI) that analyzes the data collected by its electronic eye. The alarm is triggered by the temperatures detected on the ground, and for this very reason, it is activated when the sun stops heating the earth.
The system flags areas overflown with thermal anomalies, meaning where it's highly likely that waste has been buried. Control core sampling is performed in those areas, and if positive, excavation work begins to remove the toxic mass.
"It is precisely thanks to this innovative and perhaps unique system," explains Major Emiliano Nacar, commander of the Marigliano Local Police, "that it was possible to seize an area spanning two kilometers in the Regi Lagni, in the municipality of Tufino, in the Naples area, specifically in the bed of the river, where buried barrels were found.
Additional waste, stored at a depth of 200 meters, was discovered in two landfills. The operation, carried out on behalf of the prefecture, resulted in what we believe to be the largest environmental seizure ever carried out in Campania, amounting to 70 square meters of land.
"So far, thanks to this system, developed and patented together with the Nolana Area Development Agency, 55% of the Land of Fires has been mapped, and the Marigliano Local Police has thus become part of the control room for the 'Land of Fires.'" Nacar concluded, "The system has also been used to detect the presence of weapons in Scampia and other highly criminally infiltrated neighborhoods in the city of Naples."
