A strong earthquake, with a magnitude between 4.6 and 5.1 according to a provisional estimate by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, was recorded in the province of Campobasso at 23.52pm yesterday.
The shock occurred in the area: 2 km W Montagano (CB), with geographical coordinates (lat, lon) 41.6450, 14.6460 at a depth of 23 km.
The earthquake was also felt in Campania and in the L'Aquila area. Some cracks on the walls were reported in some municipalities, in Campobasso scenes of panic in the streets, increased traffic, great fear, people in pyjamas and even with suitcases in tow.
It is the consequence of the earthquake that shortly before midnight hit the province of Molise with its epicentre in Montagano and which was felt throughout the region and in neighbouring Abruzzo up to Pescara and the Adriatic coast but also in many municipalities of Campania including Naples and the province of Salerno.
