ARPAC, the Campania regional environmental protection agency, responded to the fire, which broke out at around 4:00 PM yesterday at a scrap metal recycling plant in the PIP area of Sarno, in coordination with the fire brigade .
The fire broke out in a storage area and involved piles of metal waste. The affected area appeared to be paved with industrial concrete and served by a water collection system that conveys the wastewater for sedimentation/sedimentation and then to a chemical-physical purifier that discharges into the sewer.
As a precaution, the technicians of the Arpac department of Salerno have requested the containment of the extinguishing water on site by blocking the discharge pipe.
The Agency began monitoring air quality in the affected area, using two devices: one for measuring fine particles and heavy metals , and the other for measuring dioxins and furans. Immediately after the fire, the Fire Brigade and the Municipal Police arrived on site, and the Municipal Civil Protection office was alerted .
The mayor, Giuseppe Canfora , and the councilor for Civil Protection, Roberto Robustelli, have urged "local residents and all citizens not to approach the site of the fire to avoid hindering operations and, above all, possible smoke emissions. For this reason, occupants of homes and offices located near the fire are advised to keep their windows tightly closed."
Furthermore, an invitation "to the managers of the Martiri Villa Malta Hospital in Sarno to close the windows to avoid smoke fumes."
