Ending up in the red zone in January 2023 with an incidence higher than +25% compared to the national average (Im=Average incidence index, equal to 1,5 deaths at work per million workers) are: Umbria, Marche, Puglia, Lombardy and Piedmont. In the orange zone: Sardinia. In the yellow zone: Veneto, Tuscany and Campania. In the white zone: Emilia Romagna, Sicily, Lazio, Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Molise, Trentino Alto Adige and Valle D'Aosta.

“Even in the first month of the year, the emergency remains and the situation is still alarming. Although Italy is largely in the white zone, the number of victims is almost identical to January 2022. But what is most striking in our mapping is the mortality rate of very young workers. Those aged between 15 and 24: more than four times higher than that of their colleagues in their thirties, forties and more than three times higher than those in their fifties”.
This is the first comment of the year by Mauro Rossato, President of the Vega Engineering Workplace Safety Observatory in Mestre. His analysis goes beyond numbers and sees incidence as the true indicator of risk for workers in our country.
In the detail of the Mestre Observatory's investigation, in fact, it is discovered that the minimum mortality incidence is detected between 35 and 44 years of age (equal to 0,4 accidents per million employed), while in the younger age group, i.e. between 15 and 24 years of age, the incidence reaches 4 fatal accidents per million employed, exceeded only by workers over sixty-five (4,3).
Equally significant is the data regarding foreigners who die at work: 8 out of 34 in total. Here too, the analysis of accident incidence clearly reveals how foreigners have a risk of death at work that is more than double that of Italians. In fact, foreigners register 3,5 deaths per million employed, compared to 1,3 of Italians who lose their lives at work per million employed.
ABSOLUTE NUMBERS OF WORK-RELATED DEATHS AND ACCIDENTS IN ITALY IN THE MONTH OF JANUARY 2023
DEATHS. Always at the top of the list with the highest number of victims at work is – inevitably on a statistical level – the region with the highest working population in Italy, namely Lombardy (10). Followed by: Piedmont (4), Veneto, Marche and Puglia (3), Umbria, Tuscany, Campania and Emilia Romagna (2), Sardinia, Sicily and Lazio (1).
The attached report shows the number of work-related deaths province by province.
In the first month of 2023, the Transport and Warehousing sector recorded the highest number of work-related deaths: 5.
The age group numerically most affected by fatal accidents at work is always that between 55 and 64 years old (14 out of a total of 34).
The women who lost their lives at work in January 2023 are 2. One worker instead lost her life in itinere, that is, on the way from home to work.
There were 8 foreigners who died at work, while 4 died due to an accident while commuting.
Monday and Wednesday were the days of the week with the highest number of fatal accidents in the first month of the year: with 32,4% of the total fatal accidents at work and 20,6% respectively.
ACCIDENTS. Accident reports decreased by 31,4% compared to January 2022. There were 57.583 in January 2022, and in 2023, they dropped to 39.493. The most notable decline was seen in the Healthcare sector. Last year, there were 9.905 reports, while in January 2023, they dropped to 1.992. Equally significant was the decrease recorded in the Transportation sector: from 6.247 reports in January 2022 to 1.591 reports in 2023.
In the new year's ranking by sector, the highest number of reports comes from Manufacturing Activities (3.456), followed by Healthcare (1.992), Transport (1.591), Trade (1.512) and Construction (1.442).
In the first month of the year, there were 15.131 accident reports by Italian female workers, and 24.362 by their male colleagues.
COLOUR ZONING IS THE NEW GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION DEVELOPED BY THE VEGA ENGINEERING WORKPLACE SAFETY OBSERVATORY IN MESTRE TO PHOTOGRAPH THE LEVEL OF WORKERS' SAFETY.
The incidence of fatal accidents indicates the number of workers who die during work activity in a given area (region or province) for every million employed people present in the same area. This index allows to compare the accident phenomenon between different regions, even if characterized by a different working population.
The zoning used by the Vega Safety Observatory depicts the accident risk in the Italian regions according to the following color scale:
White: regions with an accident incidence lower than 75% of the national average incidence
Yellow: regions with an accident incidence between 75% of the national average incidence and the national average value
Orange: regions with an accident incidence between the national average and 125% of the national average
Red: regions with an accident incidence higher than 125% of the national average incidence
