The information and awareness campaigns for young people in schools will be followed by a series of activities on the city streets over the course of twelve events, including breathalyzer tests in nightlife areas and a shuttle bus to take those who have had too much to drink home.
'AppOst!' is the initiative against alcohol and drug use while driving, involving young people aged 16 to 30 in the municipalities of Salerno, Battipaglia, Cava de' Tirreni, and Pontecagnano Faiano.
The project is funded by the Campania Region with resources from the Ministry of Labor and Social Policies and sees Moby Dick Ets as the lead organization.
"It is, first and foremost, an awareness-raising project.", says the president of Moby Dick Ets, Francesco Piemonte, explaining that the project has already started in four high schools "where there are 17- and 18-year-olds who are preparing to get their driving licence, and we explain to them the potential complications of alcohol abuse while driving."
"We have foreseen - adds Piemonte - moments of local entertainment and we will be present, between June and October in Salerno, Pontecagnano, Cava de' Tirreni and Battipaglia supported and sponsored by the four municipalities, with a stand that will give the opportunity to understand if the kids have been drinking.
"Paramedics will administer breathalyzer balloons to the kids who want to take them. Then, they'll be invited to download an app, hence the name AppOst, which attempts to help the kid determine whether they've actually been abusing alcohol.", he explains.

In addition to Moby Dick Ets, the project also involves Modavi Onlus, Avis Battipaglia, Centro servizi sociali Vela, Exedra, Radio Base and the Centrale del Latte di Salerno.
"The last activity we've imagined is a car available to accompany young people who realize they've been abusing alcohol, who will take them home to one of our volunteers.", underlines Piemonte, anticipating that "We will also be present in city centers during local community outreach activities, with accident reconstructions, including displays of crashed cars that will be set up around the city to raise awareness."
This initiative will then be repeated "on the final day in schools, where we will stage a 'crime scene' with the children, who will be taught how to behave in the event of an accident. It will be a role-playing game where the children, through a playful approach, will learn to behave appropriately."
"Lately - notes the Councillor for Social and Youth Policies of the Municipality of Salerno, Paola de Roberto - There has been an increase, especially in terms of road accidents here in Salerno. As a municipality, we are working to raise awareness and address this issue.
There's a lot to do, and it's only right that all the active and positive organizations in the area join forces and, together, we begin to understand what the right way to raise awareness is, especially among young people."
