"Another attack on a colleague, a real ambush this time at the Policlinico Vanvitelli in Naples. Faced with yet another act of violence, we have no choice but to declare a state of emergency in healthcare." This is the appeal from Pierino Di Silverio, national secretary Anaao Assomed.

His complaint continues: "The condition of our hospitals It is now unlivable and urgent and concrete intervention to break the chain of violence is essential, otherwise no one will want to care anymore".

"Evidently the police forces are not enough - says Di Silverio again - but an immediate law is needed to restore safety to healthcare facilities and the role of medical and healthcare managers.

If we continue to wait, there will be no more treatments, no more doctors, no more healthcare system, and we will no longer be able to stop our colleagues from leaving, but we will protect them in all appropriate venues. This is why we are considering legal action for unsafe care.

Assaults are often an unjustifiable reaction to the endless waits caused by staff shortages. Overstretched staffing forces us to minimize communication with patients, which could otherwise help limit misunderstandings. If hospitals are left to decay, patients will react, and they will react against us.

And this is intolerable. We request," Di Silverio concludes, "an urgent meeting with the relevant ministers, but we won't settle for vague declarations of intent. Either we change things now, or we stop."
