In 2022 Campania collected 19.197 tons of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE).

This is what emerges from the regional report on technological waste produced by the RAEE Coordination Centre, the body that summarises the official results achieved by all the collective systems that deal with the collection at collection centres and organised grouping points for the distribution and management of technological waste in Italy.

The result is a 7,1% decrease compared to 2021, although it reflects the overall trend of the country, it is worse than both the national average (-6,2%) and the decreasing, but much more limited, trend of the Southern Italy macro-area (-1,1%).

For this reason, Campania has dropped one place in the national rankings for overall waste collection volumes, dropping to ninth. The decline in collection is reflected in the per capita figure, which shows a 5,9% decline, to a total of 3,41 kg per inhabitant. This widens the gap with the rest of the country, which collects an average of 6,12 kg per inhabitant, and the region once again ranks last in the national rankings.

The decline in regional WEEE volumes affects all five groups into which technological waste is divided and collected. The collection of cold and climate (R1) loses 748 tons compared to 2021 (-8,8%) and drops to 7.789 tons.

The trend is worse than the average for Southern Italy, which recorded a 1,5% contraction. The result is due to the negative performance of all the provinces of Campania, albeit with different trends: while Salerno recorded a slight decline (-0,5%), Avellino lost 4,3%, Naples 4,5%, Caserta (-19,2%) and Benevento (-18,2%) did very poorly.

The collection of large whites (R9,7) fell by 2% for a total of 2.649 tons, also in this case the double-digit decreases in the province of Naples (-21,7%) and Benevento (-19,6%) impacted the result. On the other hand, the volumes of the provinces of Salerno (+11,3%) and Avellino (+5,3%) increased.

TVs and devices with screens (R3) stood at 6.234 tonnes, down 2,6% compared to 2021. Despite the positive performances of the provinces of Caserta (+10,7%) and Naples (+10,8%), the lack of 565 tonnes from the collection of Salerno (-32,1%) determines the negative trend of the grouping which is in contrast with the average of the reference area (+4,3%).

The collection of consumer electronics and small household appliances (R4) also worsened, with -10,1% falling to 2.409 tons. The result was affected by the significant drops in the provinces of Caserta (-20,5%), Naples (-12,9%) and Benevento (-10,2%), while that of Avellino improved slightly (+0,7%), while that of Salerno remained unchanged.

The volumes of light sources (R5,8) decreased by 9,9%, but well below the national average (-5%), for a total of 116 tonnes, a value which in any case remains the highest quantity collected by the southern regions.

In terms of per capita collection, the province of Caserta is the only one above the average for the area it belongs to (5,15 kg/inhabitant) with 5,96 kg/inhabitant, but no more than the national average (6,12 kg/inhabitant) following a 7,4% decrease compared to 2021.

The values of the remaining provinces of Campania continue to be distant from the average per capita collection of Southern Italy and always in the lower part of the national ranking: Avellino with 4,26 kg/inhabitant (+1,8%), Benevento with 2,7 kg/inhabitant (-8,4%), Salerno with 3,44 kg/inhabitant (-11,6%). Once again Naples stands out for the worst performance: with only 2,58 kg/inhabitant (-3%) it is the fourth lowest result in the whole country.

"The 2022 WEEE collection data from Campania show a pattern of persistent mismanagement," comments Fabrizio Longoni, general director of the WEEE Coordination Center.

"Unfortunately, it is easy to imagine widespread illegal management in a region where, compared to the target set by the European Community of a 65% rate of return, figures of 10% are recorded for the large white group and as low as 4% for group 4.

With these results we are going nowhere, in such a desolate panorama it is not possible to justify any investment by companies in the treatment of WEEE"
