The Montesanto escalators, the so-called "Gradini del Paradiso" system, inaugurated on May 30, 2008, as part of the €66 million renovation of the Cumana station, have long been immersed in decay and neglect, even becoming a camp for the homeless.
In 2012 a technical meeting between the extraordinary commissioner, the Campania Region, former Sepsa, Metronapoli and the Municipality of Napoli, led to an agreement to reactivate the stairs within 8 months, which included the final delivery of the work to the Municipality, which would have taken care of its management. However, everything remained at a standstill as also documented by the deputy of the Green-Left alliance Francesco Emilio Borrelli, who has been dealing with the issue for some time, during the last inspection.
"We spoke with the president of EAV Umberto De Gregorio who informed us that the project has now been entrusted to them by the Government Commissioner. They had a meeting with the municipality to define the new project, everything will have to be rebuilt from scratch. A conference will be called within a month to illustrate it and start the work. We will continue to follow the evolution of the situation and we hope that those who have wasted millions of euros will be punished in an exemplary manner by justice" - declared Borrelli.
