Last December 20th, after the extraordinary maintenance works carried out by the Park Authority, the path n° 6 of the Vesuvius National Park, called “Along the Matrone Road,” gateway to the Vesuvius Crater from the side of the Municipalities of Trecase and Boscotrecase, closed for years after the serious damage caused by the 2017 fire and subsequent episodes of landslides.

Path no. 6 was available as a cycle-pedestrian path for the entire month of January 2023, with a reception service provided by the Park Authority Guides, to inform visitors about the duration of the route, the difficulties, and the ticketing methods for access to the Crater.

In February, due to snowfall, frost and adverse weather conditions, the Trail was often closed to the public. In addition, due to administrative problems, the support of the Park guides, whose contracts are being renewed, was lost.

Following the installation of the Extraordinary Commissioner Raffaele De Luca, and pending the completion of the renewal of the reception service by the Park Authority Guides, an agreement was reached with the Forestry Carabinieri of the Biodiversity Department, thanks to whose collaboration the gates of Path no. 6, at the Fixed Post of Trecase, have reopened during the same opening hours as the Gran Cono del Vesuvio.

“We have tried to find a temporary solution – declares the new Extraordinary Commissioner of the Vesuvius National Park Authority, Attorney Raffaele De Luca – in response to the many requests from enthusiasts and tourists to return to visit the Matrone and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Boschese side”.

“In agreement with the Carabinieri Forestali of the Biodiversity Department, whom I thank, – continues the Commissioner – we have agreed to resume visits on the path with their collaboration. As soon as possible we will also restore the activity of welcoming visitors at the fixed place in Trecase.”

"Finally, we are starting the procedures for the purchase of electric buses that will take tourists to the square at 1.050 meters above sea level - concludes Commissioner De Luca - for which the design of the redevelopment works is already ready. The Matrone road will become the green way to enjoy Vesuvius".
