Caserta . Nine anti-mafia bans have been issued by the Caserta Prefecture since the beginning against companies and cooperatives active in the social welfare sector and operating in the Caserta area known as "agro-caleno," particularly in Sparanise and surrounding towns.
The Municipality of Sparanise was in fact dissolved on December 16 by the Ministry of the Interior due to Camorra infiltration, which emerged following an investigation by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of Naples and the Flying Squad of Caserta into the activity in the sector of social services and assistance to people in the Agro-Calano area by some cooperatives, controlled by people who investigators believe are close to the Casalesi clan.
Among these is Eufrasia Del Vecchio, known as Esia, sister of Carlo Del Vecchio, historical contact of the Casalesi in Santa Maria Capua Vetere who has been detained for years, and linked by kinship to the Schiavone Camorra family.
Among those under investigation are the former mayor of Sparanise Salvatore Martiello, who is charged with corruption and bid-rigging, and numerous entrepreneurs known in the area as managers of social-welfare cooperatives who have been working with municipalities and public bodies for years.
After the dissolution of the Municipality of Sparanise, the Prefecture of Caserta led by Giuseppe Castaldo intensified its analysis of the cooperatives involved in the investigation, denying them the anti-mafia certification necessary to be able to take contracts from public administrations.
In the last twelve months, in particular in the period between yesterday, February 28, 2023, and February 28 of last year, there have been 40 total bans issued by the Prefecture of Caserta; with the nine concerning the social-assistance sector, the other bans have affected companies operating in the dairy, distribution, construction and commercial sectors.
