Meeting in Ercolano, 6 billion in cash, start with the clean-up.
"There are six billion euros in the coffers, now we can start the clean-up operations. We must make the fight against the problem of the Lands of Fires and the affected areas of our territory operational." With more men and resources. This was stated by the Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies, Sergio Costa, closing the meeting "Legality and Environment in the Land of Fires: Building a Sustainable Future Together," organized in Ercolano by Pianeta Sindacale Carabinieri. The meeting also saw the presentation of a branch from Falcone's tree by the Commander of the Campania Forestry Corps, General Ciro Lungo, and the Secretary General of the Carabinieri Police Commissioner Vincenzo Romeo to the school principal Rossella Di Matteo of Tilgher di Ercolano.
"I am addressing you students - Romeo said, as reported in a note - because this day was organized precisely to provide you with models and proposals to be protagonists of your future".
"If we care about the environment, we have to do our part.", explained Raffaele Cantone, prosecutor in Perugia who analyzed the genesis of the term "ecomafia": "We bring refrigerators and sinks under the Asse Mediano overpasses. The Camorra continues to do business, but we must also rethink our behavior. Today, we must understand that waste management isn't just a matter for the judiciary, law enforcement, or politicians; it's our own issue, one that must spark a cultural shift.".

"Family and schools are crucial in a path of growth of awareness and responsibility in each of us. - echoes Gianpiero Zinzi, member of the Environment and Territory Commission in the Chamber - You young people are our future, and when you take our place, you will have to demonstrate that you govern with love for your territory." Lungo listed the tasks of the forestry police working in a complex area where the number of crimes is constant, with approximately 250 factories seized each year and 60 illegal landfills discovered in the Vesuvius area alone in 2022: "Let's not forget the issue of forest fires. We all remember what happened on Vesuvius and how crucial collaboration between all local stakeholders is to prevent such events.".
The director of Arpac Campania Stefano Sorvino underlined how they operate in a region second only to Lombardy despite suffering from a chronic lack of personnel and funds: "We would need twice as many technical operators. Often, the inspections and sampling we carry out as Arpac are not financially covered, just think of the investigations we carry out on the Sarno River.".
The task of closing the proceedings was assigned to the Vice President of the Chamber, Sergio Costa, a former Carabinieri General and Minister of the Environment: We are the first country in the world to have included environmental education in our students' curriculum. We have understood, as a country, that we must train the leaders of the future in schools, otherwise we will continue to say we have missed an opportunity. The existence of the Lands of Fires, understood as a national problem, and the correlation between these pollution phenomena and the state of health of all of us are now a proven fact. The solution is clear: we must start with the cleanup. And doing so becomes a priority because there are six million euros of funds that simply need to be used..
