The Campania Civil Protection Department has extended the current weather alert for rain and thunderstorms to the entire region until 6:00 a.m. on Monday, April 17. The criticality level, i.e., the hydrogeological risk for thunderstorms, is Yellow throughout the region.
The storm phenomena will be characterized by "forecast uncertainty and rapid evolution and could be accompanied by hail, lightning and gusts of wind". The precipitations, in some points of the territory will be "sudden and intense".
The impact of precipitation on the ground could cause flooding, increase in the hydrometric levels of watercourses with flooding of neighboring areas, runoff, flow of water in roadways, phenomena of back-up of rainwater disposal systems. The risk of rock falls and occasional landslides associated with particularly fragile hydrogeological conditions of the area is also highlighted.
The particular type of rapidly evolving storms, accompanied by wind, hail and lightning, could then cause falling branches or trees, damage to roofs and temporary structures.
The Civil Protection of the Campania Region recommends that mayors "activate or keep active the COC (Municipal Operations Centers), verify the correct reception of communications by the Regional Operations Room, implement all the prevention and mitigation measures of the foreseen risks in line with the respective municipal plans as well as monitor the correct maintenance of public green areas and structures exposed to wind stress".
