Directors Mattia Colombo and Gianluca Matarrese arrive in Naples to present the documentary “Il posto”. It is the next stop of AstraDoc – Viaggio nel cinema del reale, a documentary festival curated by Arci Movie in the hall on via Mezzocannone. The appointment is for Friday 14 April 2023 at 20:30 pm: the evening will also feature the cast of the film which has been shown at numerous international festivals including the prestigious Visions du Réel in Nyon and Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto.
The documentary (Italy/France, 2022, 75') - an Italian-French co-production between Altara Films (Florence) and Bocalupo Films (Paris) - is shot on board a special bus, a fresco of stories that talk about work, unemployment, mobility, but also and above all about dreams, aspirations and life. The Bus To Go, which leaves from Salerno and crosses Italy at night, is a bus full of young nurses on temporary contracts who go to the North to take the tests of the maxi-public competitions. Passing a test is the only way to get a job in a public hospital and unemployment in Italy has reached such high numbers that thousands of people show up for the competitions. There are very few places available and the temporary workers have to try their luck over and over again. It is the bus of hope and many choose it because it is cheaper than trains and planes and also allows them to save money on hotels. Because if you have to try again and again, how can you afford so many trips when you're out of work?
“Il Posto is an “on the road” documentary that reflects on the mirage of a permanent job and the drama of a nation struggling with unemployment, a journey into the heart of a great social, moral and economic crisis that is not only Italian but European. We came into contact with the tragic peculiarities that characterize it: precariousness and nomadism. And we felt increasingly involved. Because these peculiarities do not only concern the category of nurses, but an entire generation of workers. A generation that has learned to deal with uncertainty, but that still yearns for the search for stability. […] The choral aspect of the story of the individual passengers coexists with the narration of the single character of Raffaele, the founder of the service. The dramatic arc of his character evolves in parallel with the journey and acts as a common thread throughout the film, so much so that Raffaele becomes a sort of container, a reflection of all the other stories. Each character, in turn, emerges from the chorus and takes on the responsibility of developing a specific theme. We can say that each character is like a single musical instrument in an orchestra and that the film is built as if it were a large symphony. There are musical moments where all the instruments play together and moments in which the single instrument isolates itself to perform its solo”, from the director's notes.
