The Coast Guard of Ischia together with the Police Station Ischia carried out a large-scale operation on the island of Ischia, called 'Clean Island', coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Naples, to combat the illicit activities of two island companies operating in the septic tank cleaning sector (the so-called 'autospurghi').

The two companies were charged with organized activity for the illicit trafficking of waste. The Coast Guard and State Police personnel carried out a search of the companies' offices and seized the warehouses and 10 vehicles used in the illicit activities.

After a long investigation, which began in 2020, through stakeouts, shadowing and photographic documentation of the illicit activities carried out by the companies, widespread corruption in the sewage truck sector has been brought to light.

The sludge sucked up during the cleaning operations of septic tanks, both in private homes and commercial activities, identified by the law as liquid waste to be disposed of in authorised disposal centres, was, instead, illegally poured into rainwater channels or into specially constructed absorbent wells, causing environmental pollution.

Therefore, the companies legally disposed of only a part of the waste on land, at authorized centers. Of note is the position of two of the investigated individuals, whose illegal activities took on the characteristics of real business organizations dedicated to the illegal trafficking of waste.

In order to obtain an unfair profit consisting in the economic return of not having to bear the costs due for disposal at authorized sites, despite the fact that the costs for the disposal operations were equally charged to the customers, the investigated companies illegally disposed of large quantities of waste.
