A robot engaged in research on the submarine Titan has reached the bottom of the North Atlantic and begun its mission to locate the vessel that has been missing since last Sunday, the US Coast Guard said, as reported by Sky News.
“The Canadian vessel Horizon Arctic has deployed a ROV (remotely operated vehicle) which has reached the seabed and begun the search for the missing submarine,” the U.S. Coast Guard tweeted.
At the same time, he added, “the French vessel L’Atalante is preparing its ROV (the Victor 6000, ed.) to enter the water.”
The U.S. Coast Guard announced today that it is continuing its “rescue” efforts to rescue the Titan submarine and its five occupants missing near the wreck of the Titanic, despite fears that its oxygen supplies are running low.
“Even in particularly complex cases, the will to live of the person has to be taken into account. And so we continue to search and continue our rescue efforts,” Rear Admiral John Mauger, head of search operations, told NBC.
Wendy Rush, wife of OceanGate owner and lost North Atlantic submarine pilot Stockton Rush, is also the great-granddaughter of Isidor and Ida Straus, two first-class passengers who were aboard the Titanic when it sank in 1912.
The Strauses were among the Titanic's wealthiest passengers, the BBC reports: Isidor and his brother Nathan were co-owners of Macy's department store. Survivors of the tragedy recalled seeing Isidor refuse a place on a Titanic lifeboat until all the women and children had come aboard.
Ida, his wife of 40 years, refused to go without her husband and the two were seen embracing as the ship sank. A fictionalized version of this scene was depicted in James Cameron's 1997 film Titanic, which shows a couple embracing in bed as it sinks.
According to New York Times archives, Isidor’s body was recovered from the sea about two weeks after the sinking, while Ida’s remains were never found. Wendy Rush, OceanGate’s current communications director, married Stockton Rush in 1986 and has been on three expeditions to the Titanic wreck.
