From today, anyone arriving at the Maritime Station of Napoli with cruise ships or at Molo Beverello from the islands of the gulf you can reach Piazza Municipio using the underpass and therefore without having to cross the road.
But not only. The underpass takes citizens and tourists directly to the entrance of the line 1 of the subway and in perspective also to the access of line 6 which will open, on the entire route from Municipio to Mostra d'Oltremare, on 1 July 2024.
“The construction site had been open for over 20 years,” said the mayor, Gaetano Manfredi, “we have given a very important boost in this last year, acquiring the area of the Port Authority, and there has been great cooperation and institutional synergy because in this area there are so many skills and therefore we had to bring together many bodies.
It is a fundamental work – he added – because the underpass will allow citizens, tourists and cruise passengers to cross Piazza Municipio and access the metro station line 1 and next year line 6: it is therefore a fundamental hub for the future of transport in the city”.
Along the underpass, citizens and tourists can already admire the walls of the port Greco-Roman which constitute only a part of what will be a real archaeological area. Here, in fact, once the work is completed, there will be a real museum.
“It will be the calling card of the history of Naples – the mayor underlined – but above all it is an extremely modern and contemporary infrastructure”. The opening of the underpass is also an important tool to streamline traffic and road conditions.
And to 'push' citizens to use the underpass - as explained by the Infrastructure Councillor, Edoardo Cosenza - "the times of the pedestrian traffic lights will be changed immediately, giving less crossing time: if we manage to eliminate the pedestrian crossing on the surface, we will be able to reduce traffic enormously".

This seems like a great initiative to improve traffic flow in the area. Let's hope it works!
