5000 artefacts will no longer be accessible to visitors.

The National Archaeological Museum of Volcei in Buccino has closed its doors. A closure that is decidedly penalizing for the area in a period of great tourist flow.

The decision, requested by the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Salerno and Avellino, was deemed necessary due to the lack of maintenance by the Municipality of Buccino, which, despite numerous requests, failed to comply with the obligations established by the assignment agreement.

The structure preserves over 5000 finds from the Tanagro area, including the tomb of gold, the vases signed by the ceramist Assteas, including the crater depicting the abduction of Cassandra. Buccino loses this opportunity, unfortunately it will not be possible to visit one of the treasure chests of the south, inside which it preserves over 5000 finds from the Tanagro area, including the famous tomb of gold as well as the vases signed by the ceramist Assteas from Paestum, including the crater depicting the abduction of Cassandra, whose importance is known to experts and non-experts.

The closure of the Volcei Museum occurred on the orders of the new director of the museum and area representative of Sabap di Sa-Av, Dr. Lorenzo Mancini, who delegated the former official, Dr. Adele Lagi, in the presence of the president of the Pro Loco di Buccino Volcei Aps, Luisa Gaimari, the deputy mayor Antonella Trimarco and the culture councilor Anna Ferrara. A decision that was necessary given the lack of maintenance, reported several times, in recent months to the municipal administration. For months, in fact.

The Pro Loco Buccino Volcei, which for 13 years, by virtue of an agreement, managed the MANV allowing it to be opened to the public, reported verbally and with several certified emails, sent to the municipal administration and to Sabap Sa-Av, serious problems with the safety systems of the museum structure, and the need for maintenance, all appeals that were ignored by the Municipality, despite the various requests sent by President Gaimari, one of the many sent on July 4th.

In response, the Municipality, in the same period in which the Pro Loco reported the serious malfunctions, was preparing, despite being aware of the problems, to call for an expression of interest to be able to entrust it to third parties, which occurred despite the seriousness on August 23 and then after not even 48 hours canceled the assignment. But unfortunately the structure needs work, specifically, due to significant water infiltration from the eastern wall of the monastic complex, urgent maintenance work has been necessary for months, repeatedly requested by the Pro Loco.

In fact, the lack of immediate intervention has led to the formation of widespread moss and mold in the Roman room of the Museum with the consequent deterioration of the plaster, a situation that worsened when the water reached one of the electrical panels, which could certainly have been seriously damaged given the problems encountered. A lack of maintenance that, at least for now, has led to the closure of the museum structure, until now the jewel in the crown of Buccino.
