On August 29, 2023, the president of the ANPI branch of the province of Salerno, Ubaldo Baldi, authorized activist Severino Calicchio to submit a request to name a room in Palazzo Salerno, in the municipality of Camerota, after the citizens of Camerota who participated in the resistance.
The small town in Cilento can boast a high number of participants in the resistance: 14 are in fact registered in the list of “The partisans of Italy” (file of the commissions for the recognition of men and women of the resistance).
Of these, 3 partisans were killed by Nazi-fascist fury: Vittorio Pellegrino (killed in Bra together with Matteo Gancia), Francesco Cusati (cousin of Vittorio Pellegrino, killed in combat in Cuneo), Salvatore Mazzeo (lieutenant doctor, joined the resistance; he was captured in Coazze, tortured and, then, together with other partisans, forced to dig his own grave into which he was thrown after being shot).
All participants in the resistance distinguished themselves through their commitment in battle.
Among other prominent figures of the resistance we also remember Dr. Francesco Lanza, one of the organizers of the Four Days of Naples. He, nicknamed "the communist dentist of Via Foria", was the leader of the Cilento nucleus of the resistance, precisely on the occasion of the Four Days.
“Given the historical importance of the Resistance, of Memory, and of the contribution of these partisans, given the imminent opening of a place of particular historical importance, such as Palazzo Salerno, and given the presence of an ever-increasing number of Camerota citizens who ask to “remember” and actively inform, especially young people, we sincerely hope that the Municipality of Camerota, in particular in the person of Mayor Mario Salvatore Scarpitta, will accept the invitation of Dr. Ubaldo Baldi, on behalf of the entire ANPI”.
