Green sea in Casal Velino: it's the algae's fault

A careful observation under the optical microscope of the sea water samples taken near the shoreline of the coast of Casal Velino (Salerno), affected by an intense bright green color, has highlighted a “monospecific algal culture” characterized by the presence of a green microalgae (Phylum Chlorophyta, class Prasinophyceae) presumably belonging to the genus Pyramimonas. In fact, high concentrations of these microalgae can color the coastal marine stretch of a bright emerald green.

This can be read in a note from the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Mezzogiorno “Algal blooms of Pyramimonas sp. have already been previously reported in Italy along the coasts of Marina di Massa (Massa) in 2003 and, along some stretches of the Calabrian coast in 2021. However, for the microalgae under examination, no toxicity has been reported either for humans or for marine fauna”, continues the note.

The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Mezzogiorno, together with the relevant authorities, continues to monitor the waters "to ensure the protection of citizens and marine biodiversity; the analyses on phytoplankton carried out by the Izsm in the marine waters of the Salerno coast, which in recent days has shown a fluorescent green core, have highlighted the bloom of an alga of the Pyramimonas genus, an alga with great photosynthetic capacity. No adverse reactions to contact are reported in the literature", explains the health director of the Izsm Campania and Calabria, Esterina De Carlo.
