The Mediterranean and the Route of Aeneas, a journey into European values and culture.
From August 31st to September 3rd, four days of shows, music, seminars, poetry readings to celebrate the Route of Aeneas, the 45th cultural itinerary of the Council of Europe. The Festival, in its 3rd edition, will take place, as part of the Antro festival, between Sorrento, Cuma and Baia. On September 1st, the Ship of Aeneas leaves from Sorrento.
Four days of shows, music, seminars, conferences, readings, tastings to tell the story of Aeneas' Route, the journey from Troy to Rome of the hero sung by Virgil, which entered the "gotha" of itineraries certified by the Council of Europe in 2021, thus becoming the 45th European cultural itinerary. From August 31 to September 3, FIRE, the International Festival of Aeneas' Route, will take place between Sorrento, Cuma and Baia, now in its third edition. To celebrate the legendary journey, Aeneas' Ship will also depart from Sorrento on September XNUMX.
The Festival is organized by the Rotta di Enea Association, by the Archaeological Park of Campi Flegrei, as part of the “Antro” festival, with the collaboration of the Municipality of Sorrento and Slow Food.
“The European Parliament’s September 2022 recommendation to the Commission – declared the president of the Rotta di Enea Association, Giovanni Cafiero – recalls our itinerary as a strategic cultural infrastructure in the context of new policies for the Mediterranean. The Bay of Naples is a central place from a historical point of view, because around this basin a wonderful mix of cultures and an uninterrupted flow of commercial exchanges have taken place, and symbolic, because from here Aeneas sets out again to meet a future of greatness and great opportunities for the new generations”.
Cuma itself, the Phlegraean Fields, and Capo Miseno are in fact significant stages of the Trojan Hero's journey. In Cuma, the Sibyl, in Virgil's story in the Aeneid, has the dual function of seer and guide of Aeneas in the afterlife, Capo Miseno represents the tomb of Miseno, Aeneas' trumpeter, and the Archaeological Park of the Phlegraean Fields holds extraordinary archaeological treasures.
“An increasingly close alliance, that between the Aeneas Route and the Archaeological Park of the Phlegraean Fields – underlined the Director of the Park Fabio Pagano – For the third year within the program of Antro, the Festival of the Archaeological Park of the Phlegraean Fields, the International Festival of the Aeneas Route finds its home. A renewed opportunity to build international relations, to broaden the horizons of development and to think of the Mediterranean in its purest essence as that of a mirror of identity and a vector of acculturation”.
The Cruise of Values – from Sorrento to Baia
Also this year to celebrate the archaeological, cultural, maritime itinerary of the Aeneas Route a cruise will take place - the Cruise of Values - a navigation in the symbolic places of the journey of Aeneas. The Aeneas Ship will depart from Sorrento on September 1st to land in Baia retracing along the Bay of Naples one of the most suggestive stretches of the Campania route of the Trojan hero on his journey to Rome.
“It's truly an honor - declared Luigi Di Prisco, President of the Municipal Council of Sorrento –host this important event that combines history, environment and culture. An event that symbolically unites the entire Gulf of Naples, from Sorrento to Baia. These are pleasant and sought-after locations appreciated since ancient times and, for this reason, home to seaside villas frequented for stays and holidays by the Roman aristocracy. A virtuous example of that Campania Felix that remains a model to imitate in terms of sustainable tourism development”.
