The Carabinieri have identified the people who last night allegedly defaced seven columns of the portico that supports the Vasari Corridor in Florence, on the Lungarno near Ponte Vecchio, with a writing referring to a German football team.
The suspects are two German tourists on holiday in Florence who are now at the provincial Carabinieri headquarters in Borgo Ognissanti to carry out the procedures necessary for their identification.
The Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, as well as the director of the Uffizi Eike Schmidt and the mayor Dario Nardella, strongly condemned the incident.
The Minister also declared that “Following yesterday's very serious act against the Vasari Corridor and the identification of the alleged perpetrators of the act thanks to the invaluable work of the Carabinieri, the Director of the Uffizi has just confirmed to me that this morning the cleaning and restoration work on the surfaces involved has begun.
A tender will soon be concluded that will allow the entire museum complex, including the area of the Vasari loggia, to be equipped with armed guards 24 hours a day”. The Ministry of Culture will be at the forefront in taking civil action against those responsible.
The 'eco-vandals' bill, soon to become law, will include a fine imposed by the Prefect equal to the cost of repairing the damage caused. At the moment, the Vasariano area is expected to cost 10.000 euros”.
